OMC expands UK manufacturing facility to cope with increased demand

Increased investment in Smart Factory practices boosts sales of fibre optic data links

Mar 2015…OMC, the pioneer in optoelectronics, has announced it is expanding its UK manufacturing facility based in Cornwall. Work has started on a brand new factory at the company’s Redruth site which will double the current floor space and increase production capacity.

“The decision to expand our capacity further has been driven by demand for our fibre optic transceivers and cable assemblies,” explains OMC’s Commercial Director William Heath. “We are seeing increased demand from industry as firms integrate Smart Factory/Industry 4.0 related facilities into their designs. These require large amounts of equipment performance data to be collected in order to fine-tune production processes, increase output and give companies a competitive edge. In an electrically noisy environment, electrical transmission of signals and sensor data within equipment and machinery can often be disrupted, so optical transmission is preferred. We design and manufacture glass and polymer fibre optic cable assemblies and complete optical circuits, including the transmitter, receiver and cable assembly, eliminating any need to “mix and match” devices when constructing an optical link. In addition, our Active Component Alignment™ technology ensures that our fibre-optic data links perform consistently and reliably from link to link irrespective of how parts are matched up in the final application. We find that customers implementing Smart Factory/Industry 4.0 features into their designs are attracted by our “one stop” approach and 30 years of expertise in the industrial fibre optics sector.”

The new factory is expected to be operation in mid to late summer of this year.
