LEDs for Signmakers

Our LED products can be used for a very wide range of signage applications, including illumination of letters (both face and halo), edge-illumination of acrylic, lightbox illumination, advertising boards and illuminated trims and edging.

A common misconception that we regularly come across is that to benefit from the long life and low power consumption of LED light sources, you have to compromise on the quality of illumination.

The truth is that letters illuminated with LEDs genuinely can be brighter and more evenly illuminated than those illuminated with neon, and using LEDs does not mean that you have to have "light and dark spots" or "patchiness" around your letters - but you have to use the right product for the job.

OMC introduced the revolutionary LED Flexistrip™ to the sign market in 2005, with the aim of providing an LED product that is versatile enough to be used in 90% of signage applications while giving brightness levels that meet or exceed those currently achieved by the best neon signs. If you have a sign to illuminate with LEDs then the chances are that our Flexistrip™ is the answer – see below for a brief guide to the most common applications.

  • If you are looking to halo illuminate built-up letters, take a look at our side-firing Flexistrip™ (click HERE). The LED lensing has been optimised to achieve a bright, crisp halo, and because we use a very high LED density (LEDs/metre), the LED beams overlap very close to the strip, giving a continuous halo even when return depths are as short as an inch. Only a single run of side firing flexistrip on the inside return of the built-up letter is needed to achieve a truly stunning halo effect.

  • For face illumination, the front-firing Flexistrip™ (click HERE) is the most popular choice. The product can either be affixed to the inside return firing inwards, or cut into small sections and affixed to the back plate, firing forwards – depending on the dimensions of the letter being illuminated. With 90 ultrabright LEDs per metre, the front-firing Flexistrip™ will illuminate the face of the letter with unparalleled brightness and evenness. This product can also be used to halo illuminate flat-cut letters.

  • If you are looking to manufacture an edge-illuminated acrylic sign, either of the above two products may be used to great effect. The lensed LEDs in the side-firing Flexistrip™ will punch light further into acrylic, so use the side-firing version for deeper signs. Meanwhile, the compact size of the front-firing Flexistrip™ makes this version ideal for when you are trying to conceal the LEDs in as small a channel as possible.

  • For lightbox illumination, the front firing Flexistrip™ (click HERE for the product page) is again the most popular solution – simply affix a run of strip to the internal edges of the lightbox. For larger lightboxes, the Flexistrip™ can instead be laid in strips on the inside back face of the light box. By the way, have you seen our ultra slim snap-frame LED lightboxes? If not, check them out by clicking HERE.
